Over the past few years the concept of 'boundaries' has become somewhat of a buzz word.

Whether it is used in personal relationships with families and friends or with your co-workers, this term has ridden the wave and monopolised society.

Some people have proved successful in putting the word into action and have had no problem setting boundaries in their lives. But not everyone can say 'no' and put their feelings first. It's a curse!

If you are someone who finds difficulty in saying 'No' and find that people take advantage of you, then you need to read this.

The thing about saying 'No' is that it shouldn't be viewed as something rude or unkind but rather as something that helps you maintain healthy relationships and protect your well-being while also respecting your needs and limitations.

Far too often, we don't prioritise our mental health and what we want to do in comparison to pleasing others and being there for them.

Some things to identify and consider when you want to start setting boundaries include:

  • Identifying what your needs and limitations are
  • What do you not want to compromise on?
  • Practice communicating assertively but with kindness
  • Let go of the need to explain yourself to everyone
  • Remember that putting yourself first is not selfish, don't allow anyone to make you feel bad about that

It is important to be consistent, like any change, setting boundaries isn't going to happen overnight.

"If someone repeatedly crosses your boundaries, it’s essential to address the issue and reaffirm your limits. Stand firm in your decisions and don’t be afraid to enforce consequences if necessary." (MSN)

And like anything in life, if you are feeling overwhelmed about setting boundaries, don't be afraid to ask for help. Speak to someone you trust and ask for advice, don't internalise things, it's never healthy.
