Woman upset that her BF asked her pay half the bill at her birthday dinner

What do you think? Is she rightfully upset or just being ungrateful?
Dating someone during a birthday can be a tricky affair. Mostly because of the uncertainty involved in how much or how little you are expected to do.
Some might say that bigger milestone birthdays should be made a fuss about. But what if you've only been dating someone for a short while. Then what?
Do you still make a big fuss over the person even though you are not fully serious with them yet? The amount of questions you have to ask yourself can go on and on. Understandably so...
But not all people who enter into relationships are on the same page. For instance, this woman posted her birthday story to a group page online to ask people what they thought of her feelings.
It was her 30th birthday and she has been dating a guy for nine months now. He got her a necklace from Amazon, that she described as looking "really cheap". She even said that it broke after wearing it for 10 minutes.
Now her dilemma is that her boyfriend is quite a savvy guy and is financially sound. But at her birthday dinner, he asked her to split the bill with him...
Many people took this opportunity to share their personal views, telling her to break-up with her boyfriend.
But online publication Bored Panda reached out to a relationship empowerment coach, John Kenny. This is what he revealed: "It shouldn’t be hard to find something your loved ones enjoy if you notice what they are interested in.
"But if you put thought into something, then the receiver, on the whole, will appreciate it. Be aware of their love language too, as you can make it even more special if it fits their style.”

Kenny went on to say that the boyfriend in this story did not take the time to understand what it is his girlfriend likes or enjoys.
He made her feel undervalued and uncared for, and this could lead to detrimental effects on the relationship.
Perhaps it could mean that they both share a different love language and the birthday was the trigger point of identifying what works for each of them.
“It should be evident to them how you feel about your birthday,” Kenny said. “If they don’t realize that you are looking forward to it, haven’t discussed the significance of it, etc., then they may think you don’t want to be made a fuss of or thought about. If they also don’t indulge themselves on their birthday, then they may do the same with you.” (Bored Panda)
