People say that the older you get, the less you care about what others think about you. With age comes confidence and freedom of expression.

For the elderly residents of Chinatown in San Francisco, this confidence is demonstrated through fashion and style.

Photographer Valerie Luu began photographing the residents of Chinatown in 2014, wanting to document their vibrant style and personality. These are not your average grandmas and grandpas: they take their daily outfits very seriously, and would not be out of place in the pages of popular fashion magazines.

Valerie's blog, Chinatown Pretty, captures the essence of everyday characters of Chinatown.

Valerie loves to ask the people she photographs about their stories. She told Huffington Post that the residents' stories about the struggle of immigrating to the United States add context to their style choices, elevating a simple outfit to something important.
