Best of Pretoria: Burgers
Updated | By Charis Apelgren

At Jacaranda FM we make no secret of our love for food. For a lot of us, burgers top the list of 'best fast food ever' so we decided to hunt down some of the best burgers in the capital city. They might not be ready in under 2 minutes, but go to any of these places and the wait will be worth it.
We won't lie, it was difficult to narrow the options down, but here are our top 5 burger places:
1) Ed’s Diner
Ed’s in Parkview offers a good family dining experience, and a huge selection of burgers on the menu, both chicken and beef. The portions are big, the restaurant is normally buzzing, and service is quick. As if that wasn’t enough to convince you, there’s another bonus too – it’s reasonably priced even if you end up choosing a burger with all the toppings you can think of. For the non-burger eaters (if these people exist) there’s also salads, wraps, sandwiches and other options.
DK Burger
2) located downstairs from De Kloof restaurant in Waterkloof, DK focuses on making the humble burger into a gourmet dish. The menu is small, but freshly prepared and offers something for everyone. This is a place best enjoyed with a cold beer – which is lucky, because DK also serves a selection of craft beers. (Psst…we hear the onion rings are ah-mazing).
3) Lucky Rodrigos
Lucky’s will be familiar to any of Tuks’ students. It’s been said to attract a fairly alternative crowd, but go there at any peak time and you’ll notice the huge array of people all there for the brilliant food. To be honest, anything from their menu is a safe bet and you’ll be satisfied, but their burgers are the way forward. You can construct your own burger with your choice of patty (beef, vegetable and haloumi, or chicken) and then add your toppings and side orders. Yet again, the onion rings come out top. You will absolutely be coming back for the onion rings along, so don’t be shy to add them! Make sure you bring a big appetite as the servings are decent. If you want to come on a Friday or Saturday though, bookings are essential as the place gets packed.
4) Café Bugatti
This may not seem like the obvious choice, but we speak from experience when we say give Café Bugatti a go. Particularly on Mondays and Wednedays, when they have a ‘buy one get one free’ special. The burgers work out incredibly cheap when you go for this deal, and they have everything from plain burgers up to blue cheese sauce. Again, servings are big (we are loving this big portion trend so far) so come hungry!
5) Burger Bistro
If you fancy a drive to a different area, head to Burger Bistro in Villeria. The reviews speak for themselves, and many claim they have the best burgers in Pretoria. We don’t know if that’s true or not, but they definitely make our ‘best of’ list. There’s burgers with melted brie and strawberry, blue cheese sauce and tomato jam, and a whole host of other options making it scarily difficult to decide what you want. They get fresh bread delivered and make homemade fries, so this is the place for a really authentic burger. Plus, we’ll let you know – they have a “secret” burger. Ask for it and wait to be amazed! If you’re going all out, order one of their milkshakes for maximum enjoyment (and maximum calories, but we all know calories in drinks don’t count…right?).
