Bridget Masinga - "right now women can be their own worst enemy"

Bridget feels even though the advancement for women’s rights has come so far, there is still a long way to go. She thinks, "right now we can be our worst enemy.

Bridget Masinga

Bridget Masinga has been in the media industry for over 15 years and believes that some stories are best Googled.

When she started in radio it was quite a male dominated field, in large it still is, but women have done incredible at breaking down those walls and proving that they are just as good and even better at times than their male counterparts.

She believes that television has always been the more diverse and far more welcoming space. Entertainment as a whole can be very tricky and can hammer on your spirit, often you’re being judged just as you walk in and people have made assumptions about your intellect, your integrity and your intentions simply because you are a woman in the entertainment industry.

"There are restrictions in the entertainment industry, you don’t see women advancing very much in the programming and general management spaces, which is odd to me because the growing demographic in this space in this country is the female listener. So often when I share my future aspirations of being at the helm of a media company as CEO, most men always seemed surprised. It’s as if they don’t expect women to have the desire to break that ceiling. As though we are meant to be about the gloss and not the hard work."

Bridget feels even though the advancement for women’s rights has come so far, there is still a long way to go. She thinks, "right now we can be our worst enemy. The need to be “the only” or “the first” is crazy. We should always want to create an environment that in conducive for other women to come through the channels."

"I draw from varying people, men and women alike for a number of reasons. I tell all young women I engage with that it’s important to identity with people who inspire you, and if you don’t have a personal relationship with them, you can still learn and benefit from their journey."

When it comes to entering the entertainment industry Bridget believes that you should hold fast to your dreams and set goals then go out and get them. Entertainment is a thankless field, filled with rejection and naysayers but as long as your compass is pointed towards the direction of your authentic self, you will have no issues succeeding.

"My meassge this Women's Day is its never to late to chase your dreams. And at any point you can redefine who you want to be in this world. "
