New museum opened to honour South African slaves
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Slavery is a big part of our history.
Over 71,000 slaves were brought to Cape Town between the year 1653 and 1856, Marklives reports. Unfortunately, not only were the slaves reportedly stripped of everything that was theirs, but they also lost their identity, as they were given new names.

In remembrance of them, the Iziko Slave Lodge Museum has now been opened in Cape Town. The museum has a documentary, titled “The Slave Calendar”, which features slaves who had their surnames changed to calendar months.
