“The people are looking for an alternative and we will be that alternative,” Msimanga says.

Msimanga says people are no longer voting for the ANC because of sentiment but that they are looking at the serious issues that have been ignored by the ruling party.

“Being able to bring the ANC under 50% in a number of cities in the country, shows that democracy has matured,” he says.

He adds that he doesn’t expect much from the State of the Nation Address as issues pertaining to the capital city will not be mentioned by the president.

“Another issue is the militarization of the parliamentary precinct. How can they not allow people near the people’s parliament?” Msimanga says.

Roads around parliament have been closed off since early this morning, with police not even allowing pedestrians access near the parliamentary precinct.
