Madikizela-Mandela’s support for issues such as land expropriation without compensation and free higher education was a central theme at the memorial service.

More than one speaker said land expropriation without compensation would be a fitting honour way to honour Madikizela-Mandela.

The ANC Youth Leagues’ (ANCYL) Sifiso Mtsweni said the league is happy that Madikizela-Mandela at least saw the realisation of free higher education for the poor in her lifetime.

However he urged government to also implement the expropriation of land without compensation as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Cosatu’s Zingiswa Losi said even though Madikizela-Mandela was married to former president Nelson Mandela, her voice was still one of the most important during the struggle against apartheid.

“She earned her own stripes in the struggle. She stood out as an activist with her own organic radical ideas."

Delivering the keynote address, ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule condemned what he called "bourgeoisie tendencies within the party".

Describing Madizikela-Mandela as a true leader, Magashule lauded her for the contribution she made to the lives of ordinary South Africans.

“You would find her in the streets, at funerals and churches,” said Magashule. “Winnie never wanted leadership status.”

Magashule also added his voice to the calls for the expropriation of land without compensation.

“Free education must happen. Economic transformation must happen,” he said.

But he warned that economic transformation will not happen while ANC members are involved in factional battles.

The struggle stalwart, who passed away last week Monday at the age of 81, will be buried in Fourways on Saturday.
