Loadshedding causing an increase in food wastage

With the effect of loadshedding, increasing food wastage in South Africa, the Breakfast with Martin Bester team discussed a few tips on how to reduce food wastage.
The negative effects of loadshedding are felt by residents across South Africa.
With the lack of electricity, food wastage has also increased due to fridges and other storage units that use electricity not being able to run.

The most important factor, however, is to ensure that food stays cool.
If meat products, like chicken and fish or milk, have reached room temperature, it is at risk of salmonella and e-coli. Other meat items are also at risk of different types of bacteria.

Keeping food cold during loadshedding could include keeping the fridge door closed or buying ice packs to keep food cool.
According to IOL, food items could also be transferred from the fridge to the freezer during loadshedding and consumers can buy smaller quantities of food.
