Police Minister Bheki Cele says he's disappointed to see custodians of the law among those breaking the law.

Cele was speaking in Durban on Wednesday where he revealed the crime stats since the start of the lockdown.

According to Cele, contact crimes have dropped compared to the same period in 2019 but admits there are still some problem areas.

At least 118 000 people have been charged for various contraventions - 89 of which are cops.

Some men and women in blue now face a variety of charges including the sale of alcohol, corruption, and organising gatherings.

“Nobody will escape the law, it doesn’t matter who you are.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you are a councillor, whether you are a minister of state, whether you are a police - if you contradict these laws, you will be arrested, and the law will take its course.”

Cele also warned that there would be a zero-tolerance for those flouting regulations, including owners of shebeens selling alcohol illegally.

“Illegal shebeens must be raided, arrest the owners, confiscate the alcohol, confiscate the fridges and everything.

“If you go to the illegal shebeen and you take the fridges and alcohol, you are taking the tools of crime.”
