Geoff Makhubo

Makhubo visited the Pan African taxi rank in Alexandra on Thursday morning to inspect the latest safety measures for taxis and commuters.

The latest health and safety measures will see each taxis feature separation screens and hand sanitisers.

The vehicles are also disinfected and cleaned after every journey.

"We have ensured that there's leadership in all taxi ranks and transport hubs and I'm happy with the progress that has been made,” said Makhubo.

"In fact, I think this one in Alexandra is actually much more advanced than all others but I am very, very happy with the progress that we have seen from that time at Bara (Taxi Rank) until now.”

At the same time Makhubo warned Gauteng residents to adhere to the regulations, even though it has been eased under level 3.

"At the beginning, Gauteng had the largest numbers of infections, now we've been overtaken by the Western Cape -  not that we celebrate it.

"Eastern Cape is the second largest with the rate of infections, Gauteng is now number three. One of the things we have done here Gauteng is to ensure that we reduce the rate of infections.

"In fact, recoveries in Gauteng are higher and it is due to collaborations so my message to the people for Johannesburg to keep the rate low.

"Let's not call June 1, because alcohol industry has been open, and we call it New Year. It's not New Year. We have done very well so far, let's not regress to where we were in the beginning of the pandemic.”
