North West records first Covid-19 death, death toll rises to 206

North West has recorded its first Covid-19 death as the country continues to grapple with rising infections and fatalities.

South Africa has recorded 12 new deaths, bringing the death toll up to 206.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize visited the Eastern Cape on Monday to access the province’s response to the pandemic, where he revealed the latest stats.

“This one is a patient that had comorbidities, largely what we call ‘thromboembolic phenomena’,” says Mkhize.

“We lost that one.”

The provincial health department released the latest batch of statistics on Monday, with Gauteng number of confirmed cases now at 1952. There are also 1305 recoveries and 22 fatalities, according to the department. A total of 59 people are receiving treatment in public and private hospitals around the province.

An additional 637 confirmed cases were also recorded - there are now 10,652 confirmed cases.

Some 4,357 of these have recovered.

“In the Eastern Cape 1356, Free State 135, in Gauteng 1971, KwaZulu-Natal 1372, Limpopo remain 54, Mpumalanga only 63, North West 50, the Northern Cape has 30, and the Western Cape had the highest increase and now has 5621,” said Mkhize.

“That is a matter of concern because it puts Western Cape at 52.8% of the numbers in the country.”

Mkhize added that President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit the Western Cape soon.
