Marriage is a beautiful union that brings two individuals together.

It allows the two to become a family, work towards building a future together, and spend the rest of their lives together.

Although it is not a secret that we tend to become like the people we spend the most time with, what is surprising is that a study has found that married couples who have been married for a long time tend to look alike over the years.

The study was done by psychologist Robert Zions. According to the Mental Floss publication, the psychologist did a study with photos of couples when they first got married. He then gave participants photos of the same couples 25 years later, and it was proven that many of the couples looked alike after years of marriage.

According to Psychology Today, the reasons why married couples may look alike include - in-group bias, implicit egotism, the familiarity effect, and sexual imprinting.

New York Post also reports that empathetic mimicry is one of the reasons why couples that have been married for a long time start to look alike. The publication explains that 'people who share a strong bond – and consequently experience a higher degree of empathy for one another – mirror each other’s expressions, leading them to develop similar facial musculature over time'.
