The meeting was convened by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government and was attended by premier Senzo Mchunu and co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the presidency said in a statement.

“Izinduna had raised concerns about the proclamation determining the salaries of Izinduna which was approved by the president following recommendations by the Commission on the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers, as they had not been paid by the provincial government.”

Sunday’s meeting discussed this matter and agreed that Izinduna should be recognised for the work that they did in their traditional communities.

“The meeting also reiterated the need for a legislative review to ensure uniform national standards in the way traditional institutions and their representatives are recognised and supported by the democratically-elected government,” the presidency said.
