According to the organisation, Wildlife Direct, one elephant is poached every 15 minutes  - something Panettiere wants to put a stop to.

Panettiere has been very vocal about animal rights and posted a picture of her "adoption certificate" on social media.

She also joined the Whaleman Foundation to try to disrupt the annual dolphin hunt in Japan as well as dolphin hunting in Norway.

"Best Day Ever!!! I am the proud foster parent of an orphaned elephant named Malkia," she wrote.

Hayden Panettiere is an American actress, model, singer, and activist who is  known for her roles as cheerleader Claire Bennet on Heroes, Juliette Barnes in Nashville and Kairi in the video game series Kingdom Hearts.

The CEO of Wildlife Direct, Paula Kahumbu says they recently launched the Name Them, Save Them campaign.

"The African elephant is under threat and with just 400 000 left in the wild could be extinct by 2030," the organisation's CEO Paula Kahumbu says.
