How to survive the office Christmas party

It's been a long year and everyone wants to have a little fun, but where does one draw the line?

Every year there's that one colleague, or handful of colleagues, who have a little too much to drink and cause a bit of chaos.

There are some definite dos and don'ts when it comes to the office Christmas party

Here are five tips to help you navigate the festivities:

1. Don't party too hard

Yes, this is the number one priority and there truly is such a thing.

Even though downing the free booze may seem like a good idea when you're in the moment, but hindsight is perfect vision and it's taught us - it's really not such a good idea. With too much alcohol in your system you may end up saying or doing something you'll regret afterwards and you don't want to be the talk of the town at the water cooler on Monday.

It's important to remember that you still have to work with your colleagues after the festivities and getting too drunk could cost you your credibility, reputation and in the most extreme scenarios, your career.

2. Never approach your office crush alone

Temptation is the devil. Don't take your flirting too far. With the liquid courage you may have the needed boost to make a move, but tread with caution. The office party is not the place or time for a drunken hook-up.

3. Stay hydrated

Balance is key and hydration does not refer to alcohol despite what some may think. Be sure to have a bottle of water on hand. Better yet - drink plenty of water before the party so that you don't start the festivities dehydrated.

4. Pace yourself

The day or night is long and there is no need to get sloshed within the first half hour of the party.

A few drinks to get merry is okay, but if you start to feel drunk JUST STOP! Your liver still needs to function for many more years.

5. Hit the dance floor

It's been a crazy year in South Africa. Hitting the dance floor will get your endorphins going and also keep you distracted from what may get you into trouble later.

Most importantly - have fun and be safe!
