SA artists celebrate SABC's decision to play 90% local music
Updated | By ZAlebs
South Africans were celebrating on Wednesday after the SABC's announcement that they will start to play 90% local music on their radio stations.
In a statement, the broadcaster said: "Following extensive and successful engagements with some music representatives, the broadcaster has taken a decision to implement 90% of local music across the 18 radio stations as from 18 May 2016."
The decision comes after several artists, including Don Laka, made it their mission to fight for local music to be played on local radio stations, instead of focusing on international artists. Bra Don claimed that 15,000 jobs were lost in the industry because of this.
Another artist who wasn't shy to share his views was Cassper Nyovest. In an interview on Metro FM with Bonang Matheba last year, the rapper said despite his Refiloe album going platinum, radio stations were not playing his music.
He said: "I just put out 20 songs, I don't have one song that's playing on radio... They don't play my stuff on radio, man."
He also mentioned that he needs to be treated like Beyoncé. "Like the radio is supposed to play me like Beyoncé, you know what I'm saying."
Well we're sure that he'll be happy about the SABC's decision to focus on local music.
