SA cast for The Color Purple musical
Updated | By MornéJK
The State Theatre will be holding auditions for the all South African would be cast members, for the Tony Award winning musical, The Color Purple.
The musical production is a celebration of African-American women’s triumph over adversity and will be on at the State Theatre in 2017.
What better way to celebrate women on this landmark day, than by this historical moment in South African Theatre.
National Women's Day was first celebrated on the 9th August 1994 in commemoration of the 20,000 women who, in 1956, marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country's pass laws.
It is not completely a coincidence that The South African State Theatre and Executive Producer Bernard Jay, together with director Janice Honeyman, will be holding auditions on Women's Day for the female roles to be cast in the 2016 Tony Award winning musical The Color Purple, which will be staged at the State Theatre in Pretoria for the first time in South Africa in 2017.
Since the British actress Cynthia Erivo won the Tony Award on Broadway last month as Best Actress in a Musical for her triumphant portrayal of the vulnerable but spirited Celie in The Color Purple, it has become the worldwide actress' dream to take on this awesome role.
The producers are hoping that Women's Day 2016 in South Africa will lead them to the beginning of the discovery process of South Africa's own Celie.
