Basic Education to probe 'unusual behaviour' in schools

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says her department will establish a commission to investigate what she described as unusual behaviour by pupils at schools in several provinces
Motshekga briefed the media on Sunday afternoon.
She says over 3000 schools, especially in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and Gauteng, have reported highly emotional outbursts and physically harmful practices by some pupils.
"The exact reasons for these strange experiences are not quite established, but it seems to be beyond simple matters of ill-disciplined pupils at schools,” said the minister.
“While the Department of Basic Education has established policies like the Code of Conduct to address issues related to the behaviour of pupils in schools.
“We call upon parents, caregivers, community leaders, the religious fraternity, traditional leadership and all school communities and members of society in general to join us to work together to address the social challenges that we face.
“The violence, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and bullying all have a negative impact on the growth and development of children," added Motshekga.
She said the various social ills affecting communities do have an impact on the performance of pupils in school.
"Our duty as a society is to support our children and remove all barriers and distractions that will impede their progress in life.”
