By-election to be held in Vuwani soon
Updated | By Laila Majiet
A by-election is set to take place in the new municipal entity in Vuwani following the death of a newly-elected ward councillor.
The ANC candidate in Ward 3 died after the candidate nomination process had concluded, before the municipal elections on 3 August.
Residents of the new municipal entity will take to the polls within the next 90 days, the IEC has confirmed.
Limpopo IEC spokesperson Nkaro Mateta says: "We are just waiting on the municipal manager to declare the vacancy so that the IEC can prepare."
Violence broke out in Vuwani in May over a demarcation dispute.
Residents are unhappy with the Municipal Demarcation Board's decision to incorporate Vuwani into a new municipality along with Malamulele.
More than 25 schools were torched and vandalised during the community protests.
On voting day, police and other law enforcement agencies were sent into Vuwani to ensure peaceful elections.
However, voter turnout was extremely low with many residents participating in a street soccer tournament instead.
