12 nabbed in Limpopo for fraudulent roadworthy certificates
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Twelve vehicle examiners and administrative clerks are set to appear in the Polokwane Commercial Crimes Court in Limpopo on Thursday.
The former employees of the privately-owned Polokwane Vehicle Testing Station are accused of manipulating the system to issue roadworthy certificates for vehicles not physically presented to the station for testing.
The offences were reportedly committed between 2019 and 2021.
The suspects were arrested in different locations following an investigation by the Hawks and the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s national traffic anti-corruption unit.
They are facing multiple counts of fraud related to issuing motor vehicle roadworthy certificates.
Road Traffic Management Corporation Simon Zwane says unsuspecting people's personal information would be used to issue the fraudulent certificates.
"They would use the ID of somebody who was not even there to manipulate the system for a vehicle that has not been brought to the station. So, for scores of vehicles of which they generated roadworthy certificates, they never got tested."
