On Thursday the provincial command council, led by Makhura, gave an update on the province’s efforts to fight coronavirus.

Makhura said the new beds will be added to the 8,301 beds which are already available.

Of the 1,600 beds – 600 will go to the George Mukhari cluster, 800 to the Chris Hani Baragwanath cluster and the remaining 200 beds will go to Ashanti Gold Hospital.

“The last set of additional beds would be the Ashanti Gold Hospital in the West Rand,” says Makhura.

“That’s an old hospital that has been made available to us by the mining houses. We are refurbishing it and I know it will be available by the end of May.”

The province now sits with 1,720 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and a death toll of 15.

Makhura adds that the province will move quickly to roll out more tests to ensure cases are detected sooner.
