17 suspects have been arrested on charges of public violence after residents from the informal settlement of Tjovitjo in Orange Farm protested on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Shaan Motsapi says residents took to the streets in the early hours of the morning.
They reportedly barricaded the Golden Highway just before the train bridge towards the Vaal with rocks and tyres.
Motsapi says the residents claim their community leader was arrested for assaulting a Tjovitjo resident and for basic services such as water and electricity.

Motsapi says they will be appearing at the Vereeniging Magistrates court on Wednesday.
Motsapi says the police were able to disperse the crowd and the roads are open again.
Police are still monitoring the situation.
