200 000 apply for police jobs

Only 4500 out of the over 200,000 people who applied for police officer posts have reached the final selection phase, the SA Police Service said on Sunday.
"Today a total of 4500 aspiring police candidates have reported to 10 academies around the country to undergo a final selection phase known as 'grooming camps' before they can be considered for recruitment in the South African Police Service," said Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale in a statement.
Over 200,000 applications were received after extensive marketing drives were held to advertise 3800 posts.
Qualifying applicants who met the basic enlistment requirements were subjected to psychometric and physical fitness assessments, Makgale said.
SAPS followed a stringent recruitment process to ensure that the best candidates were chosen to serve as police officers.
