Ramaphosa made the announcements on Monday evening, while addressing the nation on the 21 days of national lockdown.

The president announced the fund would be chaired by Gloria Serobe and the deputy Chairperson is Adrian Enthoven.

Interim leader of the DA, John Steenhuisen, says the party welcomes the large patriotic donation by the Rupert and Oppenheimer families of R1 billion each.

"Locking down our country and seeing the army on the streets is not something anyone wants to witness during peace times.

"But these are not normal times and we are facing a virus that threatens our economic well being as well as the health and the sustainability of our country," says Steenhuisen.

The party says it is ready to assist President Ramaphosa and his government as much as possible.
