26 nabbed in Mpumalanga for copper cable theft

Police in Mpumalanga have arrested 26 suspects linked to massive copper cable and mine equipment theft in Delmas.
This brings to 45 the total number of people arrested over the past two months for copper cable theft.
Fourteen suspects were arrested on Thursday and the other 12 were arrested on Friday.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe says cooperation between the police and Delmas Colliery led to the arrests.
“Delmas Colliery for the past two months has apparently been targeted by a large group of suspects for their mine equipment and especially copper cable. It is reported that losses ran into nearly R60 million.
“These arrests follow a collaboration between the police and Delmas Colliery Security personnel.”
Shongwe says the theft is nothing less than economic sabotage.
“Such acts of economic sabotage have a negative impact on private companies, that provides livelihoods to many people across our country, including foreign nationals.
“Therefore, the police must thoroughly investigate these cases so that the perpetrators, even those who are behind these acts, face the full might of the law.”
The suspects are expected to appear in the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
