Since the start of the national lockdown almost three weeks ago, the national carrier has undertaken several repatriation missions in and out of the country.

Spokesperson Tlali Tlali says SAA is expected to operate a number of other passenger and cargo flights in the coming weeks.

“SAA will today bring more than 300 passengers from Miami, Florida in the United States.

“The aircraft stopped in Dakar, Senegal earlier and is expected to arrive in Johannesburg just after 18:00 before proceeding to Cape Town and Durban.”

This comes after the announcement that the government will not be funding the national airline any further. Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has rejected the SAA business rescue practitioners' request for a further R10 billion. In a letter directed to SAA business rescue practitioners Les Matuson and Siviwe Dongwana, Gordon indicated that the government doesn't have the money.

SAA has operated a total of 20 chartered passenger flights and additional two cargo only flights to Germany and to China in just two weeks.

“In the process, we transferred 4 011 passengers in and out of South Africa,” Tlali adds.

“The majority of passengers transported were on our outbound flights chartered by various foreign governments, being repatriated to their respective home countries.”
