5 arrested as taxi violence flares up in Atteridgeville
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Police have charged five taxi drivers with attempted murder after several shots were fired during a taxi protest in Atteridgeville.
Taxi drivers in the area barricaded several roads across Tshwane on Tuesday.
It's unclear whether the violence were due to tensions between rival taxi associations or disagreements between disgruntled groups within the same organisation in Atteridgeville.
"There was a shooting incident that took place amongst the groups. We retrieved cartridges that were used on scene," says the Tshwane Metro Police Department's Isaac Mahamba.
According to Mahamba, police expect to make more arrests as investigations continue.
"There are firearms that were used, we are searching for those firearms. We believe that there are people that will assist us. The suspects that we know, they might lead into retrieving those firearms that we need at this stage."
The suspects are facing several charges including public violence, taxi violence and attempted murder. They are expected to appear in court soon.
