65 JHB students arrested
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
According to a police spokesperson the students are expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate's Court on Thursday 29 January.
“They were arrested for public violence,” he said.
Sasco Gauteng deputy secretary Joyce Phiri said there was no violence or damage to property during the protest.
“The protest was regarding accreditation of some courses and the late arrival of course material. They were silently waiting for management to respond when the police came,” Phiri said.
Police could not comment on whether the students where disruptive during the protest.
Phiri says Sasco Gauteng is against the arrest of innocent students who were striking for legitimate issues.
“The arrests were inappropriate, this was a legal gathering by students concerning genuine matters” she said.
According to reports by students, college management met with students and the deputy Minister of Higher Education Mduduzi Manana on Wednesday.
The principle of the college Jeff Sibeko was not available for comment at the time of publication.
