Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi says only certain schools in Tshwane have personal protective equipment (PPE).

Lesufi was briefing the media at the Brynston High School on Monday.

He said delivering PPE in two Tshwane distractions has been challenging due to interruptions.

Lesufi says some business forums in Tshwane are accusing the Department of giving Bidvest a PPE tender instead of allowing local businesses to produce the equipment.

"There are people who believe we have given a contract to Bidvest and we have explained that Bidvest has donated their services but regardless of this, these people still want to disrupt and say they don't want Bidvest in the township," said Lesufi.

"The areas that are hardest hit are Tshwane West and Tshwane South. For example, in Tshwane West, we are at 61%, of the 103 schools that were supposed to get PPE, about 65 have not received," said Lesufi

He added that they have had to ask for police to escort the Department's officials in delivering to these areas.

Most schools have received the necessary equipment in preparation for grade 7s and 12s to return to class on June 1.

Lesufi said no learner will be allowed back at any school if the PPE has not been delivered.
