74 arrested in Katlehong amid ongoing tensions

Gauteng police arrested 74 people in Katlehong in Ekurhuleni on Thursday on charges of public violence.

This follows several incidences of looting and unrest on the East Rand, Johannesburg CBD and Pretoria CBD throughout the past two weeks.
The total number arrests for public violence since the unrest and looting erupted in the province has risen to 497.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mathepelo Peters says that the situation in Katlehong was calm on Friday morning.
“While 11 people were killed during this period, only 7 deaths have been directly linked to the incidents of violence as police investigate the circumstances of each death.”
