Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics Kedibone Diale-Tlabela says it will take six to eight months to repair the bridge on Hendrik Potgieter Road in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg.
Diale-Tlabela inspected the damage to the road during a site visit on Wednesday.
The bridge, which is on a road linking Johannesburg to Krugersdorp, partially collapsed due to the heavy rains in Gauteng since last week.
Diale-Tlabela said the road between Johan and Van Staden Streets are currently closed as a safety measure.
“We have prepared a team from our department that will be working around the clock to ensure that the bridge is fixed. I have been told by the engineers that the process could take six to eight months to complete the bridge.
“I trust the team that’s we have put in place to work on the project and put proper improved structure. The road is currently closed, and we request road users to use alternative roads.
“Minimal work has started, the service providers have assessed the area and decided on what needs to be done.”
