The 55-year-old was serving parole after qualifying for a remission of his 12-year sentence announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last year.

He had been convicted for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and arson.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Thembinkosi Kinana said more information would come to light when Dalindyebo appears in court.

“The SAPS can confirm that cases of malicious injury and damage against property by axe, have been opened against a 55-year-old from the Bumbane Kingdom.”

Royal spokesperson Nkosi Dumisani Mgudlwa told the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) that it was clear that Dalindyebo wanted to attack his son, acting king Azenathi Dalindyebo.

“We had to leave rooms so that we could find safe spots where we would be able to do other things like spotting him, checking what’s happening and also trying to get the message across.”
