A specialist engineer and his girlfriend have been granted bail of R50 000 each after briefly appearing in court on Wednesday.

Xolela Masebeni (30) and his 20-year-old girlfriend Athembile Mpani, appeared in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court on charges of theft, fraud and money laundering.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says the couple allegedly stole some R100 million.
“Furthermore, both accused are not allowed to leave the Eastern Cape (where they reside) without written permission from the investigating officer.”
Masebeni allegedly siphoned the money from his employer between September to December 2021.
He allegedly transferred the money into six accounts, including that of his co-accused.
“The alleged fraudulent transactions were uncovered by ABSA’s forensic division and they reported the matter to the law enforcement authorities. Their investigation alleges that Mpani accessed a Meridian system to debit the corporate business account,” adds Mjonondwane.
He was arrested by the Hawks in January.
The case has been postponed to 14 March for further investigation.
