A video depicting the three motorists from a blue VW polo being beaten by gun-toting men who had alighted from a black SUV with blue lights mounted on them went viral this week, causing widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.

It later emerged that the attackers were police members who were part of deputy president Paul Mashatile’s security detail.

Investigations into the attack continue.

Authorities confirmed that the victims were trainee members of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF).

A civic organisation representing one of the victims claims they have been barred from speaking to anyone about the incident unless a general is present.

Action Society’s Ian Cameron took to social media where he claimed one of the victims was prohibited from speaking to a journalist.

“So you want to tell me that the SANDF choose criminal cops over an innocent victim that was hurt in the way that he was,” Cameron said in his Twitter video.

Jacaranda FM News reached out to the SANDF in this regard, but by the time of publication, the reply was still pending.

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said charges were officially brought against the SAPS members over the attack that occurred on the N1 in Johannesburg.
