ActionSA: ‘Water shifting’ no solution to Gauteng water crisis

Rand Water says the ANC’s failure to prioritise the maintenance of infrastructure in Gauteng has led to the water supply crisis in the province.

Water levels at several Joburg reservoirs remain ‘critically low’

Rand Water on Sunday confirmed the implementation of water shifting in a bid to ensure water supply to all areas in Gauteng on Sunday.

This would see water being shifted from one system to another to ensure a balanced and equitable supply of water to residents.

Minister of Water and Sanitation Senzo Mchunu encouraged water service authorities, including Rand Water, to implement the system as an interim measure to ensure no area sits without water for a prolonged period.

Gauteng's three metros have been battling with erratic water supply over the past month due to storm-damaged infrastructure and a sudden rise in temperatures.

Taps have been running dry in many areas across Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni over the past two weeks.

ActionSA provincial chairperson Funzi Ngubeni said the new system is intolerable and must come to an end as soon as possible.

"South Africans have been forced to accept inadequate administration and a lack of service provision, which violates millions of people's rights and reduces their quality of life.

"The minister's order brings little to no hope as various townships and suburbs have already been without water for weeks due to Rand Water and Johannesburg Water system failures,” added Funzi.
