AfriForum ready to privately prosecute Grace Mugabe

AfriForum says it is ready to file
papers to privately prosecute former Zimbabwe first lady, Grace Mugabe, should
the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) fail to do so.

On Monday the High Court in Johannesburg set aside government’s decision to grant Mugabe diplomatic immunity for the alleged assault of model Gabriella Engels in a hotel in Sandton in August 2017.
The court ruled the immunity was inconsistent with the law and ordered the former minister to pay the legal fees of all parties involved.

AfriForum’s Willie Spies says the organisation expects the NPA to seek Mugabe’s extradition so the court processes can start.
"If the NPA does not continue with their work or do what is expected of them constitutionally, the we will consider, actually not consider we are currently working on it already, to institute the private prosecution through the private prosecution of Afriforum, under the leadership of Gerrie Nel," Spies says.
He says AfriForum believes 90 days is a reasonable time to allow the NPA to do its job.
"You normally give an institution such as the NPA a reasonable time and 3 months is reasonable.”
