AfriForum welcomes NPA decision to prosecute Alexis Bizos
Updated | By Neo Motloung
AfriForum’s Gerrie Nel says the National Prosecuting
Authority (NPA) has decided to prosecute Alexis Bizos for the alleged assault of his wife Monique van Oosterhout.
Alexis is the son of prominent human rights lawyer George Bizos.
Van Oosterhout laid a charge of domestic violence against Bizos in 2015.
The NPA refused to prosecute but has now made an about turn.

Nel says the NPA initially refused to prosecute Alexis Bizos because Van Oosterhout was a single witness even though medical records proved she had six broken ribs.
“They [NPA] said your husband have made the same allegations against each other and therefore your evidence mutually destructive towards each other,” says Nel.
Nel adds the other reason given by the NPA not to prosecute Bizos was due to the fact that both parties suffered injuries and therefore it believed it could not proceed with an assault case.
Van Oosterhout says it has taken years of consistent pressure to convince the NPA to prosecute Bizos
