PUBLIC PROTECTOR PRESENTS PRASA REPORT - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has found evidence of maladministration and improper conduct at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa). 


In her report titled 'Derailed', she also found that former CEO Lucky Montana has been involved in at least six incidents of maladministration


Madonsela recommended that the Prasa board commission a forensic investigation on all Prasa contracts issued under Montana's leadership between 2012 and June this year. 


Madonsela says the rail agency will have to keep her informed on the progress of the investigation, as soon as they implement her recommendations...


 


TASK TEAM TO INVESTIGATE POLICE KILLINGS - The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety and Security, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has set up a task team to investigate the police killings in the province. 


This follows another incident where two police officers were killed over the weekend, bringing the number of police officers killed in 2015 over the 50 mark. 


The MEC's spokesperson Thapelo Moiloa says the task team will look at the trends of police killings...


 


KREJCIR CONVICTION WELCOMED - The National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega, has welcomed the conviction of Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir for kidnapping, attempted murder and intent to deal drugs. 


Krejcir and five of his co-accused were found guilty in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg today. 


Police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says the conviction will send out a strong message to other criminals...



Krejcir and his co-accused will be sentenced on the 11 September.

 


NUMSA AND BOSSES MEET OVER STEEL JOBS - Metalworkers union Numsa has called for the nationalisation of parts of the steel industry, in order to avert a jobs bloodbath in the sector. 


The union, together with Solidarity and UASA, met with government at the weekend to discuss the looming retrenchments in the industry


Numsa's Irvin Jim says nationalising steel plants would put more power in government's hand to save jobs...


 


MARKETS TAKE A KNOCK - International markets have taken a knock, following the news that China's economy is doing worse than expected


European markets dropped between 4 and 7 percent today, while the South African Rand traded at a 14 year low against the US dollar, trading at over R13.00
