Ahmed Kathrada Foundation to picket outside Gupta compound

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation is set to picket outside the Gupta compound in Saxonword on Friday.

gupta security clash

Board member Prema Naidoo says they're calling for other countries to take the lead of the United States by blacklisting the family accused of state capture.

In October, the US announced sanctions against the Gupta's and business associate Salim Essa.

"The Americans have blacklisted the Guptas. We're picketing outside and basically we're picketing outside because we want a few other countries to begin to investigate them," says Naidoo.

The wealthy, Indian-born Guptas are at the center of a judicial inquiry into rampant corruption during the nine-year administration of South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma.

The foundation is also calling for officials to prosecute the businessmen.

"Secondly, we want the prosecuting authority to introduce prosecution against members of the family. Thirdly, we want our authorities to recover whatever money is possible that we can bring back into the country."

Buang Jones joins seven other candidates on the list selected by the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services to replace Kevin Malunga, who has occupied the position for the last seven years. Jones' comments on the Eben Etzebeth case at a community meeting in Langebaan in the Western Cape drew widespread criticism and controversy.

Meanwhile the Hindu community has criticised the foundation's timing ahead of the Diwali festival at the weekend.

Naidoo has however defended the decision.

"We chose this day, two days before Diwali because we know that the Gupta family on a number of occasions on Diwali day used to entertain there so we now want to send a clear message.”
