Allegations of ‘vaccine racism’ in North West
Updated | By Eva Chipa
The Department of Health in North West is attending to
allegations of “vaccine racism” in the province.
Department spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane says it’s been alleged that some vaccine administrators denied black residents the jab and offered them to their white counterparts instead.
“We received allegations from the vaccinators that (other) officials in the sub-district withheld vaccines for the black community then after they sent these residents home, they called their white counterparts to come and be vaccinated in private.”
The department has since suspended a sub-district manager, nursing manager as well as a nurse at the Delareyville Community Health Centre.
Lekgethwane says the claim was lodged in July.
“We will now start with the investigations to find the exact truth on this matter, the provincial office found out about this on the 24th of July. But it seems like it has been going on for some time, the investigations will confirm exactly how long.”
