Alleged arsonist arrested on Table Mountain
A man said to be in his 40s has been arrested for allegedly
starting four fires on Table Mountain
Officials say the suspect, who's a foreigner, was discovered carrying petrol and fire devices on Tuesday.
“Helicopters have been water bombing the slopes on the mountain and the bottom section has been extinguished. The fire is effectively under control,” says the city’s Jean-Pierre Smith.
Two fire engines, one water tanker and seasonal fire fighters assisted by Table Mountain National Parks and Working on Fire, fought the blaze.
Smith added the fire on the mountain caused a loss in vegetation and animal life on the slope.
The suspect is in police custody and will appear in court soon.
