Almost 20 000 learners still need to be placed in Gauteng schools
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
The Gauteng Education Department says the number of learners who still need to be placed in schools has been reduced to 19 913.
This a combination of online applications and walk-ins.
The current number is down from the initial 58 000 unplaced learners.
MEC Panyaza Lesufi, however, says there have been 12 821 new applications this month.
"Of the 7092 that applied online that are still on the waiting list, 3930 are in Grade 1 and 3162 are in Grade 8," says Lesufi.
Lesufi admitted that the placement of learners in existing schools is not sustainable.
"Organised School Governing Bodies (SGB) have indicated that the situation is unbearable. Teacher formations believe that overcrowding may affect teaching in some of our schools," says Lesufi.
