It is alleged that the man had just returned home when he was shot by unknown assailants.

According to provincial police spokesperson Jay Naicker, a family member saw an unknown vehicle fleeing the scene after the shooting.

“The victim was conveyed to a local hospital immediately after the incident, however he was declared dead on arrival,” confirmed Naicker.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has confirmed the identity of the 58-year-old man as Reginald Ndima, Council Speaker at the AmaJuba District Municipality.

Ndima was elected Speaker following the local government elections last year.

IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa described Ndima as a “humble and responsible servant of the people”.

“The IFP is deeply shocked by this news and extremely worried about the continued killing of public representatives, especially Councillors, without justice ever being served.

“His untimely death is a loss for the people he served with integrity for 15 years as a Councillor,” added Hlengwa.

The IFP leadership is expected to visit the Ndima family on Sunday.
