Queen Mantfombi MaDlamini Zulu, regent of the Zulu nation and great wife of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini, has died.
Her passing comes more than a month after the AmaZulu nation planted its King.
The head wife took the throne a little over a month ago as the nation waits for the late monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekulu’s successor to be chosen.
The cause of the Queen’s passing was not immediately clear.
“This has taken us by surprise and left us utterly bereft. It is true that the Lord alone knows the days that He has allotted to each one of us,” said the monarch’s traditional Prime Minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, on Thursday.
The AmaZulu nation is now without a clear leader as the seat remains contested.
But Buthelezi assured there would be no leadership vacuum.
“On behalf of the Royal Family, I wish to assure the nation that while we are all rightly grief-stricken, there will be no leadership vacuum in the Zulu Nation.”
The third wife, Queen MaDlamini Zulu held the highest status among the king's wives.
She is the sister of Eswatini's King Mswati III - Africa's only absolute monarch.
"Further announcements on Her Majesty’s funeral and the necessary arrangements will be made in due course."
