ANC: Bojanala ruling won't affect national conference

The African National Congress (ANC) says the North West High Court ruling, nullifying the Bojanala regional ANC conference, will not affect the party's national conference.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe briefed the media at Nasrec on Friday.

"The regional conference is nullified by the court. That is it. And regions have no voting power in this conference by the way. We have given them two observers. So it has no material impact on the conference.”

The court found that the ANC's general branch meetings (BGMs) in 38 wards were unconstitutional.

"The only thing that may have an impact is the twenty something branches whose BGMs have been referred to in judgement. But still, we had BGMs from September to November, which were for the national conference, these were a separate thing,” Mantashe says.

He says the ANC will be looking to appeal appeal the judgement.

"You can’t give a judgement on a conference and ban ANC members from participating in their political party, which they are voluntarily joined. On that one the judges misled us and we are going to challenge that."
