The African National Congress (ANC) caucus in Parliament has labelled Democratic Alliance (DA) interim leader John Steenhuisen “irrational and childish” for his opposition to the lockdown.
Steenhuisen on Friday demanded that President Cyril Ramaphosa put an end to the national lockdown or face legal action.

This comes amid growing opposition to the lockdown which has left numerous businesses unable to operate and the country facing a deep recession.
The government, however, argues that the lockdown is necessary to curb the spread of coronavirus.
ANC caucus spokesperson Nomfanelo Kota says the DA is reckless in its demand for the lockdown to be lifted.
“These levels of incitement and calls for civil disobedience cannot go unchallenged because they are reckless and childish.
“We believe, as the caucus in Parliament, that over the last 5 weeks most South Africans have adhered to the lockdown regulations and as a result we have managed to slow the spread of the virus.”
