ANC, Cosatu, SACP call for government to accelerate vaccine rollout

The African National Congress (ANC), the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), and the South African Communist Party (SACP) have called on the government to accelerate the vaccine rollout.

The alliance held a special meeting this week on how the government is managing the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We want the urgent rollout of vaccines. Our meeting discussed the geo-politics of vaccines, we want proven vaccines. We want frontline workers to be the first ones to access the vaccine. The strong point from the alliance was that we need a corruption-free vaccine program," said ANC Gauteng secretary, Jacob Khawe.
Khawe said moving the province back to stage 5 of the lockdown will be detrimental to the economy.

He said at this stage they welcome the adjusted level 3 of lockdown announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
"We don't need to shut down the economy, the focus is on super spreaders. The results of shutting down the economy have had a devastating impact. What we lobby for are aspects of different levels to help flatten the curve. That is why we support the delay in the opening of schools," said Khawe.
