The decision was taken at a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Cape Town on Thursday.

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule says a provincial task team will take over the running of the province until a new provincial executive committee is put in place.

"The special session of the NEC resolved to intervene in the North West Province to strengthen the organization and enhance its capacity to meet its mandate to the people of the province. The NEC agreed to set up an inclusive provincial task team that will be seized with the task of uniting the organization and positioning it an effective leader of society."

Earlier this year, Supra Mahumapelo was removed as premier of the province and replaced by Job Mokgoro amid weeks of violent protests by residents in the province but remained as ANC chair in the province.

President Cyril Ramaphosa put the province under administration before Mahumapelo's removal.

Magashule says Mokgoro has been appointed as the convener of the task team.

"So comrade Mokgoro will assume political leadership of this task team. The special session directed the national working committe to convene as soon as possible to finalise an all-inclusive PTT which will be reflective of the broad political spectrum of the democratic movement in the North West province.

"So we are still taking out time because we are effectively consulting and making sure that no-one is left aside. So that we rebuild, renew and strengthen the African National Congress.

Magashule says Mahumapelo took part in the discussions and accepted the NEC's decision to dispand the leadership.

He also gave an an assurance that Mahumapelo still has a role to play in the ANC.

"The provincial task team is expected to work with all structures of the ANC, including alliance partners, in guiding the provincial government and in building a potent electioneering machinery going into 2019."
