ANC factions behind Eskom sabotage: Cope

Cope's Dennis Bloem says there is no need for Ramaphosa to look "in dark corners" for the culprits as his party believes they can be found within the ANC's ranks.

The Congress of the People (Cope) says it is not surprised by President Cyril Ramaphosa's statement that sabotage played a role in the widespread blackouts experienced in South Arica this December.

On Wednesday, Ramaphosa met with the board of Eskom, as well as Ministers Pravin Gordhan and Gwede Mantashe about the national electricity crisis.

Afterward, Ramaphosa said: "What has also come out as a great concern is that there has been a measure of sabotage, sabotage that has led to the loss, during this period, of 2 000MW. Someone in the Eskom system disconnected one of the instruments that finally lead to one of the boilers tripping, and us losing as much as 2 000MW.”

Cope's Dennis Bloem says there is no need for Rmaphosa to look "in dark corners" for the culprits as his party believes they can be found within the ANC's ranks.

"Cope warned the country already in March this year that the Eskom electricity crisis is caused by ANC factional infighting between the CR17 and NDZ factions," says Bloem.

"Those in control of the machinery and pressing the buttons at Eskom are linked to NDZ and are busy with sabotaging the operations at the utility. This faction is fighting for the heart and soul of the ANC."

Bloem insists: "We know that the sabotaging of Eskom is part of the NDZ fight back campaign to unseat Ramaphosa and take over Union Building."

On Wednesday, ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule emphasised that the ACNs tops structures are, however, united.

The party called for firm action to improve the governance and performance of state-owned enterprises such as Eskom.
